I know what it’s like to finally decide to get mental health support and not know where to begin.

There was a point in time when I knew I needed help. I was carrying the stress of working as a soldier in the military while also managing the weight that was on my shoulders one month postpartum after giving birth to my first child. I needed help coping with what I was feeling, defining my triggers, understanding my trauma, and finding a way to move through it. But finding the right therapist, especially one who specialized in my specific needs felt impossible.

Whether you’re just starting your mental health journey or have been on it for a while, one thing tends to be true for a lot of us… finding the right therapist can be hard. For most of us, it’s harder than anyone tells you it is going to be.

I would search online instead of asking people around me because I didn’t want anyone to know what I was going through and truthfully I couldn’t even begin to explain myself if I tried. During my search I would see therapists, life coaches, counselors, mentors, and wellness experts. I spent hours reading their bios, comparing specialties, and searching endlessly for places that accepted my insurance. Then, when I felt like I was hitting a dead end, I would close the tab and tell myself “I’ll do this later.”

Then later turns into weeks, weeks turn into months, and sometimes, months turn into years. This might be obvious but the longer you wait, the harder it feels to start again.

Getting support sounds easy until you finally have to do it.

You may already feel overwhelmed, burned out, anxious, grieving, transitioning, or carrying things you haven’t fully had the space to process yet. Then, on top of it all, you’re expected to sort through multiple outlets and sites to figure out who to go to and what type of help you need. It can get confusing and discouraging fast.

That’s one of the reasons Guided Therapy Co. exists. To make mental health care feel less intimidating, confusing, and less out of reach.

Let’s address the elephant in the room…

What’s the difference between coaching and therapy?

The simplest way to think about it is this. Coaching helps you take action toward a specific goal. Therapy helps you understand what may be shaping the way you think, feel, respond, cope, connect, or move through life.

A coach may help you identify steps to take toward a goal. For example, you may no longer feel fulfilled in your professional career. You want to switch occupations, but you’re unsure where to start or what field you want to be in. A coach may help you break that goal down into next steps.

A therapist helps you look at what may be getting in the way of reaching that goal in the first place. This may include where you’ve been, what you’re carrying, and what might need care before the work can start.

Therapy is not someone yelling motivation at you. It’s not someone forcing you to “fix” yourself overnight and it’s not someone handing you a perfect answer. It’s a relationship built on trust, safety, and honest reflection. A space where you can be met with care while working through the things that have felt heavy, confusing, or private for a long time. And yes, therapy can support your goals too, but it’s done on a long-term level.

Needing support doesn’t mean something is wrong with you.

Most times, the reason we feel stuck on the road to finding support is not because we do not know what we want. It’s because of fear, grief, burnout, or old patterns have made it hard to move forward.

These patterns were formed from something you learned that has helped you survive back then, and maybe even now. These specific patterns don’t support the life you are trying to build for the future. That is why the right kind of support is essential to guide you to free yourself from what’s holding you back.

Outside of finding the courage to start, it can also be hard to find someone who understands your needs, your background, your goals, and the season of life you are currently in. It can be hard to open up to someone new, especially when the whole point is to talk about things that may already feel difficult. But hard does not mean impossible.

Needing support doesn’t mean something is wrong with you. More people than we realize are in therapy trying to better understand themselves, heal, and manage life with more care. Guided Therapy Co. was built to make the initial step feel a little less overwhelming. A place where support feels thoughtful, personal, and rooted in helping you find the right fit.

We are all navigating something. Life transitions, buried trauma, old patterns, or the feeling that you don’t want to carry everything alone anymore. Therapy can be a place to begin to calm the noise. A place where you finally have the space, support, and silence you need to hear yourself clearly.

The first step is not always knowing exactly what you need. If you’ve made it to the end of this post, you’re already taking that first step. Being willing to learn, ask questions, and find out.
